Varenna is on the eastern shore of Lake Como, on the Lecco branch, and that changes the route completely: instead of the Via Regina, the transfer crosses Brianza to Lecco and runs up the SS36 expressway, then follows the SP72 lake road for the last few kilometres into the village. Varenna
About the destination
Varenna is the most compact and perhaps the most photographed village on the lake: pastel houses stacked above a tiny harbour, joined by steep lanes and a lakeside walkway built out over the water. Villa Monastero, a former convent, has a botanical garden stretched for some two kilometres along the shore, and the gardens of Villa Cipressi descend in terraces to the lake. Above the village, the medieval Castello di Vezio looks down on the central lake. Just south, in the hamlet of Fiumelatte, the stream of the same name — only about 250 metres long and among the shortest rivers in Italy — flows white from spring to autumn and disappears in winter. Car ferries and boats link Varenna to Bellagio and Menaggio.

From Malpensa the transfer takes the SS336 and the A8, crosses the northern Milan area towards Brianza, and reaches Lecco on the SS36 'del Lago di Como e dello Spluga'. North of Lecco it continues on the SS36 and leaves it for the SP72, the lake road along the eastern shore, for the last stretch to Varenna. Total 97 km, about 98 minutes. Tolls are included in the fixed price.

Varenna is at its best in spring and early autumn; in July and August its lanes and the ferry pier are crowded, especially at weekends. The gardens of the villas and the Fiumelatte follow the season — open and flowing from spring to autumn. In winter the village is very quiet, many hotels close and the ferries run a reduced timetable.
