Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) → Lugano (Svizzera)
Malpensa Airport to Lugano – Private Transfer to Switzerland
Across the Swiss border to Lugano in about an hour, customs and motorway vignette taken care of.
From €150
Secure card payment — instant confirmation
For much of Ticino, Malpensa is the nearest major airport, and Lugano is barely more than an hour away. This is an international transfer: the car crosses from Italy into Switzerland — at Gaggiolo–Stabio via Varese, the shortest way, or at the Chiasso–Brogeda motorway crossing via Como — and continues on the Swiss A2 to Lugano. Swiss motorways require a vignette — your driver's vehicle already has one, and tolls and vignette are included in the fixed price, so there is nothing to buy or sort out at the border. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you to the door of your hotel, office or private address in Lugano. One price per vehicle, agreed at booking, luggage included.
- Door to door into Switzerland — no change of train, no border hassle for you
- Tolls and vignette included in the fixed price
- Meet & greet at Malpensa arrivals with a name board, flight tracked
- Driver waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no extra charge
- Ideal for business trips to Lugano's banking and corporate district
- Spacious vans for families and ski or golf luggage; child seats on request

Lugano (Svizzera)
About the destination
Lugano is the largest city in Italian-speaking Switzerland: Swiss in its order and efficiency, Italian in its language, food and piazzas. The lakefront promenade runs from the Parco Ciani gardens to the LAC, the cultural centre that houses the city's art museum and concert hall, and the arcaded Via Nassa is the elegant shopping street behind it. Two funiculars climb the mountains that frame the bay: Monte San Salvatore from Paradiso and Monte Brè from Cassarate, both with views across the lake to the Alps. A lakeside path leads east to Gandria, a village of stone houses stacked above the water. Lugano is also a major financial centre, which keeps it busy on weekdays all year.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
From Malpensa the shortest route runs north-east via Varese and crosses into Switzerland at Gaggiolo–Stabio; the alternative goes via Como and the Chiasso–Brogeda motorway crossing. Both join the Swiss A2 near Mendrisio and continue over the Melide causeway into Lugano: 67 km, about 65 minutes in normal traffic. Allow extra time at peak commuter hours, when cross-border traffic slows both crossings. Tolls, vignette, fuel and airport parking are included in the fixed price.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Keep passports or ID cards in your hand luggage: customs checks at the border are random but real
- Switzerland uses Swiss francs; most places in Lugano also accept cards, and many take euros with change in francs
- If you plan to shop in Switzerland and return to Italy, check the duty-free allowances before you buy
What to visit
Nearby attractions
- LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura — art museum and concert hall on the lake
- Monte San Salvatore — funicular from Paradiso to the summit viewpoint
- Monte Brè — funicular from Cassarate above the bay
- Gandria — a stone village on the lake, reached on foot or by boat
- Parco Ciani — the lakeside park in the city centre
When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Lugano has one of the mildest climates in Switzerland, with palm trees on the promenade and long, warm summers. Spring and autumn are ideal for the funiculars and the lakeside walks. Weekday rush hours bring heavy cross-border commuter traffic at the border crossings, so for meetings we plan the pick-up with a margin.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Lugano cost?+
The price is fixed and per vehicle, not per passenger: from €150 with a Standard Sedan (up to 3 passengers), €175 with a Mercedes E-Class, €230 with a Mercedes V-Class (up to 7). Round trip from €285, with 10% off the return leg. Luggage, tolls, flight monitoring and airport meet & greet are included; any night or holiday surcharge is shown in the quote before you book.
Which documents do I need to travel to Lugano?+
Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union. EU citizens need a valid passport or national identity card; other nationalities need the passport (and visa, if required) they used to enter Italy. Customs officers may stop vehicles at the border, so keep your documents with you, not in the boot.
Do I need to buy the Swiss motorway vignette?+
No. The vehicle already carries it: tolls and vignette are included in the fixed price, and the driver handles the border crossing.
Where do we cross the border?+
Either at Gaggiolo–Stabio, reached via Varese and the shortest way from Malpensa, or at Chiasso–Brogeda, the main motorway crossing between Italy and Ticino, reached via Como. The driver chooses according to traffic at that hour. Either way you stay in the car.
Is there a train from Malpensa to Lugano?+
Yes: the TILO S50 links Malpensa with Mendrisio, Lugano and Bellinzona roughly once an hour. It is a good option for a solo traveller with light luggage. With several people, heavy bags, children or an early or late flight, a car taking you to your door is usually the more practical choice.
Do I need to declare anything at customs?+
Personal luggage is not a problem. Goods above the Swiss duty-free allowances, large amounts of cash or commercial samples must be declared. If you travel with any of these, tell us when you book so the driver can plan the stop at customs.
