Linate is the city airport of Milan, just 8 km from the Duomo, and we will be honest: since the M4 metro line opened, the trip into town is easy. The blue line runs from Linate Aeroporto to San Babila, a few minutes' walk from the Duomo, in about a quarter of an hour. So when does a private car make sense? When you travel with several suitcases or small children; when you are three or more, so one vehicle covers everyone; when your hotel is not on the M4, in Brera, Porta Nuova, CityLife or Isola; and when you land late, after the metro stops running. About the destination
The centre of Milan is compact and rewarding on foot. The Duomo, five centuries in the making, has roof terraces where you walk among the spires; next to it, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II leads to Piazza della Scala and the opera house. A short walk west, the Castello Sforzesco opens onto Parco Sempione, while to the north Brera combines the Pinacoteca with streets of galleries and restaurants. Leonardo's Last Supper is in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, by timed reservation only. The fashion streets of the Quadrilatero — Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga — are a few minutes from San Babila, and in the evening the Navigli canals fill with people for the aperitivo.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
Linate lies on the eastern edge of the city, 8 km from the Duomo. The transfer follows Viale Forlanini and the avenues of the eastern districts into the centre, reaching the Duomo area in about 20 minutes in normal traffic. There are no tolls on this route; fuel and airport parking are included in the fixed price.

Milan is a year-round city, but the calendar matters: during Fashion Week, the Salone del Mobile in April and major fairs at Rho, hotels and cars are in high demand, so book early. In August the city empties and many restaurants close for the summer holidays. December brings the Christmas markets and the start of the La Scala season on 7 December, the feast of Sant'Ambrogio.

How long does it take from Linate to the Duomo?+
About 20 minutes for 8 km in normal traffic. At weekday rush hours the eastern avenues into the centre can add 10–15 minutes.
Is the M4 metro a good alternative?+
Yes, and we would rather say so. The M4 links Linate with San Babila in about a quarter of an hour, with frequent trains during the day. For a solo traveller with hand luggage heading to the centre, it is the obvious choice. The private car wins with heavy luggage, children, groups of three or more, hotels off the M4 line and late arrivals.
What if I land after the metro has closed?+
The metro does not run through the night. If your flight lands late, the driver waits for you at arrivals — up to 60 minutes after the actual landing at no extra charge — and takes you straight to your hotel.
My hotel is in Porta Nuova or CityLife. Does it make a difference?+
Yes. The M4 does not serve Porta Nuova, Isola or CityLife directly: you would need to change lines with your luggage. By car the journey is direct, door to door.
