Few travellers realise that Malpensa is practically on Lake Maggiore: the airport lies a few kilometres from the Ticino, the river that flows out of the lake, and Stresa is only 52 km away, about 53 minutes by car — the same as the centre of Milan. The transfer crosses the Ticino into Piedmont on the motorway and reaches the lakeshore at Stresa, opposite the Borromean Islands. Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, loads the luggage and drops you at your hotel on the lakefront. That makes Stresa an easy first or last night of a trip: land in the afternoon and dine looking at Isola Bella, or sleep by the lake before an early flight. Fixed price per vehicle, luggage and motorway tolls included.

Stresa (Lago Maggiore)
About the destination
Stresa is the classic resort of Lake Maggiore's Piedmontese shore, a lakefront of Belle Époque hotels — Hemingway set part of A Farewell to Arms in one of them — looking out on the Borromean Islands. Isola Bella is almost entirely taken up by the Baroque Palazzo Borromeo and its terraced gardens, roamed by white peacocks; Isola Madre is a botanical garden; Isola dei Pescatori is still a fishing village of narrow lanes. Boats run to the islands from Stresa's piers, and the palaces and gardens open from late March to the autumn. Just outside town, the park of Villa Pallavicino looks over the lake; across the water, the gardens of Villa Taranto are in Verbania.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
From Malpensa the transfer heads north-west, crosses the Ticino into Piedmont on the A8/A26 link and follows the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce, leaving it to drop down to the lakeshore at Stresa; depending on traffic, the driver may use the lakeside road through Arona instead. Total 52 km, about 53 minutes. Motorway tolls are included in the fixed price.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Visit Isola Bella first thing in the morning, before the day-trip crowds arrive
- If you have a free day, combine the islands with Santa Caterina del Sasso on the opposite shore
- Staying in Stresa before an early flight: book the pick-up the day before and confirm your terminal

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Stresa's season follows the Borromean Islands, which open from late March to the autumn: spring is ideal for the gardens, and in summer the Stresa Festival brings classical music to the lake. July and August are the busiest months. In winter the palaces close and many hotels with them, but the lakefront stays beautiful and the drive from Malpensa is as short as ever.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Stresa cost?+
The price is fixed and per vehicle, not per passenger: from €120 with a Standard Sedan (up to 3 passengers), €140 with a Mercedes E-Class, €150 with a Mercedes V-Class (up to 7). Round trip from €230, with 10% off the return leg. Luggage, tolls, flight monitoring and airport meet & greet are included; any night or holiday surcharge is shown in the quote before you book.
How long does it take from Malpensa to Stresa?+
About 53 minutes for 52 km in normal traffic. The route crosses the Ticino into Piedmont and runs mostly on motorway; it does not go through Milan.
How do I get from Stresa to the Borromean Islands?+
By boat from the piers on Stresa's lakefront: public services and private boatmen run to Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre. The palaces and gardens are open from late March to the autumn; check the dates before you travel.
Is Stresa a good place to stay the night before a Malpensa flight?+
Yes. It is as close to the airport as Milan city centre, with a quieter road and a lakeside hotel instead of a city one. Tell us your flight and we will time the pick-up with a margin for check-in.
Does the car stop at my hotel?+
Yes. Stresa's hotels line the lakefront road or the streets just behind it, and the transfer ends at the entrance with your luggage.
Will my driver wait if my flight is late?+
Yes. The flight is tracked in real time and the driver waits up to 60 minutes after the actual landing at no extra charge.
