Malpensa Airport to Orta San Giulio – Private Transfer
The quietest of the Italian lakes, under an hour from Malpensa's arrivals hall.
From €85
Secure card payment — instant confirmation
Orta is the lake most visitors to Milan never hear about, and it is closer to Malpensa than Como: 47 km, under an hour through the green hills of the Novara province. There is no direct train from the airport, and the bus connections involve changes, so a private car is the natural way in. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a name board and takes you straight to your hotel. One detail worth knowing: the old village is a restricted traffic zone, so cars without a permit stop at its edge, a few minutes' walk from Piazza Motta. Tell us your hotel and we will tell you exactly where you will be set down. One fixed price per vehicle, luggage and tolls included.

Orta San Giulio
About the destination
Lake Orta is small, still and remarkably uncrowded. Orta San Giulio, on its eastern shore, is a village of cobbled lanes, frescoed façades and lakeside cafés gathered around Piazza Motta, from where boats cross in a few minutes to the Isola di San Giulio. The island holds the Romanesque Basilica of San Giulio and a Benedictine abbey, and is circled by a single lane, the Way of Silence, lined with signs inviting quiet reflection. Above the village, the Sacro Monte di Orta — twenty chapels dedicated to St Francis — is part of the UNESCO-listed Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. Couples, writers and anyone who finds Como too busy tend to fall for Orta quickly.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
Malpensa lies close to the Ticino river, which marks the border between Lombardy and Piedmont. The transfer crosses into the Novara province and runs north through Borgomanero's hill country to the eastern shore of Lake Orta: 47 km, about 53 minutes. Any motorway tolls, fuel and airport parking are included in the fixed price.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Pack light for the last stretch: the cobbled lanes of the village are steep in places and the car stops at the edge of the traffic-restricted zone
- The tourist train from the upper village to Piazza Motta and the Sacro Monte runs in the warmer months — useful if you are walking with bags
- Visit the island early in the morning, before the day-trippers' boats arrive
What to visit
Nearby attractions
- Isola di San Giulio — Basilica of San Giulio and the Way of Silence
- Sacro Monte di Orta — UNESCO-listed chapels above the village
- Piazza Motta and the Palazzotto, the frescoed former town hall
- Villa Crespi — a Moorish-style 19th-century villa, now a hotel and restaurant
- Stresa and the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore — about 20 km away
When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Orta is at its best from April to October, when the boats run frequently and the lakeside terraces are open. Summer weekends bring day-trippers from Milan and Turin, but nothing like the crowds on Como. In winter the village is very quiet and some hotels and restaurants close, so check opening before booking.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private transfer from Malpensa to Orta San Giulio cost?+
The price is fixed and per vehicle, not per passenger: from €85 with a Standard Sedan (up to 3 passengers), €100 with a Mercedes E-Class, €115 with a Mercedes V-Class (up to 7). Round trip from €160, with 10% off the return leg. Luggage, tolls, flight monitoring and airport meet & greet are included; any night or holiday surcharge is shown in the quote before you book.
How long is the drive from Malpensa to Orta San Giulio?+
About 53 minutes for 47 km in normal traffic. It is one of the shortest lake transfers from Malpensa — shorter than the drive to Bellagio or Varenna.
Can the car drive into the village centre?+
The historic centre of Orta San Giulio is a restricted traffic zone monitored by cameras, so cars without a permit stop at its edge, near the Prarondo car park, a short walk downhill to Piazza Motta. Some hotels can arrange access for their guests: send us the hotel name and we will confirm the drop-off point.
How do I get to the Isola di San Giulio?+
Boats leave from Piazza Motta and reach the island in a few minutes. Public and private boats both operate from the square; there is no road to the island.
Is there a train from Malpensa to Orta?+
There is no direct train. Reaching Orta by public transport from the airport means at least one change and a final stretch on a regional line or bus, which is why most visitors with luggage choose a car.
Can I combine Orta with Lake Maggiore?+
Yes. Stresa is about 20 km from Orta over the hills. We can book a separate transfer between the two lakes, or a return to Malpensa from either.
