About the destination
Menaggio has a real town centre — piazzas, shops, a long lakeside promenade — rather than a row of hotels, which makes it a practical base for a longer stay. From its pier, car ferries and passenger boats cross to Bellagio and Varenna, the other two corners of the central lake. Inland, the road to Porlezza leads to Lake Lugano and the Swiss border, and above the town the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club, founded in 1907 by British residents, is one of the oldest in Italy. Walking south, the Greenway del Lago di Como follows the western shore past Villa Carlotta, a few kilometres away in Tremezzo. In the old town, the church of Santo Stefano overlooks the lanes behind the lakefront.

Road, traffic and timing
From Malpensa the transfer takes the SS336 and the A8, then the A36 Pedemontana or the Lainate junction to the A9 as far as Como. From Como it follows the SS340 Regina along the western shore through Cernobbio, Argegno, Lenno, Tremezzo and Cadenabbia to Menaggio. Total 85 km, about 93 minutes. Motorway tolls are included in the fixed price.

From April to October Menaggio is busy, the ferries run frequently and the promenade is full in the evening. July and August are the most crowded months and the slowest on the lake road. In winter the town stays lived-in, unlike some resort villages, though several hotels close and boat services run to a reduced timetable.
