About the destination
Varenna is a small village of pastel houses stacked above a tiny harbour on the eastern shore, facing Bellagio and Menaggio across the water. The gardens of Villa Monastero, a former convent, run for almost two kilometres along the lake, and next to them are the terraced gardens of Villa Cipressi. Above the village, Castello di Vezio guards the hillside, reached on foot by a steep path. Just south lies Fiumelatte, a stream of only around 250 metres, among the shortest in Italy, which flows white with spring water roughly from March to October. The lakeside walkway known as the Passeggiata degli Innamorati links the ferry pier to the harbour, and the car ferry makes Varenna an ideal base for the whole central lake.
