Milan during Fashion Week and the Salone del Mobile: getting around a full city

For a few weeks each year Milan changes gear. During Fashion Week and the Salone del Mobile the city fills with buyers, press, exhibitors and visitors: hotels are booked months ahead, restaurants are full, and finding a taxi outside an event becomes an exercise in patience.

When it happens

• Salone del Mobile: every April, at the Fiera Milano Rho exhibition centre. The 2027 edition is scheduled for 13 to 18 April. Alongside it runs the Fuorisalone, with installations and events across the city, from Brera to Tortona.
• Women's Fashion Week: twice a year, in late February and in September.
• Men's Fashion Week: in January and June.

The organisers publish the exact dates of each edition: check them before booking flights and hotels.

The Fiera Milano Rho bottleneck

The exhibition centre is north-west of Milan, on the road to Malpensa. It is served by metro line M1 (Rho Fieramilano stop) and by trains calling at Rho Fiera Milano station. During the Salone the metro is packed at opening and closing times.

By car, the Fiera is 40 km from Malpensa and 21 km from Linate. If you fly in on opening morning you can go straight from the airport to the halls, luggage and all, without passing through the city.

Fashion shows: short hops, but many of them

During Fashion Week appointments are spread between the Quadrilatero, Brera, Porta Nuova, Tortona and venues outside the centre, often an hour apart. The problem is not distance but availability: as a show empties, dozens of people want a taxi at the same moment.

How to plan

• Book your arrival in advance: flights come in full during these weeks and airport taxi queues grow.
• A driver at your disposal sorts out a multi-stop day: waiting outside one event and taking you to the next, with no hunt for a car each time.
• Allow for traffic: at rush hour and around event venues journey times stretch.
• Staying outside Milan? With hotels full, some choose Monza, Como or Lake Maggiore. It makes sense, provided you have a reliable way back in the evening.

What the transfer includes
