Varenna

The village on the eastern shore

Stepped lanes, Villa Monastero and the boat across to Bellagio.

Varenna is the village of the eastern shore, in the province of Lecco, with coloured houses stepping down to the water and a walkway cantilevered over the lake. Above it stands the Castello di Vezio; on the shore, the gardens of Villa Monastero, a former convent now a house museum, and just to the north the Fiumelatte, one of Italy's shortest rivers, which flows only from spring to autumn. It has a station on the Lecco–Tirano line and a ferry to Bellagio and Menaggio: from Orio al Serio it is under an hour and a half away.

Practical tips

  • The centre is stepped and car-free: the transfer stops on the main road, a few steps from the stairways.
  • From Bergamo the route runs via Lecco: the most direct way to the eastern shore.
