Lugano

Switzerland, in Italian

The lakefront, Parco Ciani and the funicular up Monte San Salvatore.

Lugano is the largest town in the canton of Ticino, on the shore of its lake, between Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, each with its own funicular. It is Switzerland — Swiss francs, customs and vignette motorways — but Italian is spoken and from Malpensa it is just over an hour away. The centre is a grid of arcades between Piazza della Riforma and Via Nassa; on the lake stand the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, opened in 2015, and the Parco Ciani.

Practical tips

  • There may be checks at the border: keep your passport or ID card to hand.
  • Lugano also works as the Swiss leg of a day from Lake Como, via Menaggio and Porlezza.
